These are three examples where the gap between where a business was and where it could be was unusually large. Most clients see more modest improvements, but in a small business, even a $30,000 shift in profit changes what the owner takes home and how the business feels to run.

Larry: Trade business, $1m turnover

Sales had grown steadily over five years. Staff numbers had increased. The pipeline looked fine and everyone was busy. Profit never seemed to follow.

When we looked at the numbers, the issue wasn't pricing or workload. It was the way admin and back-office processes were being handled. Work was being done inconsistently. Information was being re-entered, or never entered and errors were being caught late or never at all.

Once those gaps were addressed, Larry moved from barely breaking even to around $200,000 profit. No new customers. No additional staff. Just less leakage.

Sue and Peter: Service business, 20 years operating

For most of their time in business, Sue and Peter had earned around 20 percent on sales. Over time that had slipped until they were close to break-even.

Looking at how work flowed through the business, two things stood out: pricing had become inconsistent, and people and equipment were being allocated poorly. Rather than trying to fix everything at once, they focused on a handful of high-impact changes.

In the following quarter they generated $240,000 profit on $640,000 in sales. That result didn't come from working harder. It came from removing friction that had built up over time.

Michael: Service business, $10m+ turnover

Michael's business had grown quickly. Early profits were strong, but internal processes hadn't kept pace with the growth. He was hands-off with the finance and employed a bookkeeper to do this.  The business was heading toward a significant loss despite strong sales. Cash was tight to the extent that payroll was at risk and he had lost visibility over what was actually happening.

Within the first week of analysis, over $500,000 in profit improvement was identified without touching the top line. Further work revealed closer to $3 million in opportunity when benchmarked against comparable businesses.

Michael’s challenge wasn't about management tools or systems. It was about being able to see what was happening clearly enough to manage it.

FAQs

What kinds of businesses do you work with?

Most of my clients are family-owned, owner-led businesses in the $1m–$5m range. Many are in trades or services.

Most have been running their business for several years. They've made it work, but they've hit a ceiling they can't think their way past alone.

What problems do you help fix?

We focus on three areas:

  • Knowing your numbers well enough to make confident decisions

  • Getting clear on where the business is heading and what's actually worth your time

  • Reducing how much everything depends on you

What does working with you look like?

We start by getting clear on what's really happening in your business. Then we focus on the few things that will make the biggest difference, not everything at once.

We look at real numbers and real decisions. You stay in control. I help you think clearly and follow through.

Depending on what you need, we might work together for a few weeks to a year or longer. I don’t lock-in coaching engagements but recommend a minimum of six months.

How do I know if I'm ready for help?

If you're working long hours, making too many decisions, or feel like you're guessing instead of leading, you're probably ready.

Most importantly, you need to be open to looking at what's really going on

What if my business is a mess — is that a problem?

No. Most owners reach out when things feel messy, stuck, or overwhelming. You don't need to tidy anything up first.

That said, smaller problems are easier and less costly to fix. Many clients tell me they wish they'd started earlier.

I should be able to figure this out myself — do people really need help?

Most of the owners I work with are capable of figuring things out by themselves.

The issue isn't ability. It's time, pressure, and the cost of trial and error. My job is to shorten the path and keep you focused on what actually moves the business forward.

I don't have time for this — will this add more work?

The aim is to reduce your workload, not add to it.

The owners who get the most value are the ones who stay engaged. If someone doesn't show up or follow through, it won't help them, but that's true of anything worth doing.

I'm not a "CEO type" — is this for people like me?

Yes. This isn't corporate leadership training. It's practical support for owner-led businesses.

You don't need a suit and you definitely don't need corporate speak. You just need to be tired of the business running you instead of the other way around.

Do you come in and tell me how to run my business?

No. It's your business.

You make the decisions. My role is to think with you, challenge you when needed, and help you

make clearer, more confident calls.

Can I get a grant to help fund this work?

Yes, but only if you are located in the Northern Territory. You may be eligible for an NTG Business Growth Grant which can subsidise up to 50% of my fees.

If you're based elsewhere in Australia, the full fee applies — all engagements can be delivered remotely.

Who do you not work with?

If you're looking for a quick fix, a guru, or someone to fix the business for you, I'm not the right fit.

My work is practical and collaborative. It suits owners who are willing to look at their numbers, think honestly about how things are running, and  commit to rolling their sleeves up to make changes.

Still not sure? Let's just talk.

The best way to see if we're a fit is a 15-minute "Gut Check" call. No slides, no sales pitch, and no pressure to commit to anything. We'll just talk about where you're stuck and see if my approach makes sense for your business.
