Financial clarity for not-for-profit & NDIS providers

Clear numbers, better decisions, still true to your purpose

Not-for-profits and NDIS providers face common challenges

Funding is changing, costs are always rising, and the bank balance may look fine, even if the results don’t. It’s hard for a board to make good decisions on numbers it doesn’t fully trust.

  • Which of our services actually pay their way?

  • How much of the cash in the bank is really ours?

  • Can we keep a service that matters if it loses money, and for how long?

I work with you, your finance team and your board. We look at what’s really happening, ask the questions that haven’t been asked, and set out the numbers so everyone understands and trusts them. The board still makes the decisions. My job is to make sure it has what it needs to make good ones.

Understand what your numbers are telling you

A fixed-fee financial review shows where your organisation makes and loses money, service by service, how much cash is available to use, and what to focus on first.

How it works

  1. Review your financial results and multi-year trends

  2. Split the results by service, with overheads kept separate.

  3. Work out your usable cash, after grants and other money that isn’t yours yet.

  4. Look at where things are heading if nothing changes.

  5. Agree the decisions in front of you, and what information the board needs to make them.

What I help with

Which services pay their way?
Results by service, so you can see each service’s contribution before overheads and which ones the rest of the organisation is carrying.

Will our cash last?
Cash forecasting that separates what’s in the bank from what you can actually use: grants paid in advance, money held for capital works, and leave owed to staff.

Is our budget realistic?

Budgets built on what’s actually coming, such as funding changes, award increases and plan reviews, not just last year plus inflation.

Where is our staff time going?
For NDIS providers, the gap between hours paid and hours claimed is often the biggest number nobody is looking at. I help you measure it, find out what’s causing it, and fix what can be fixed: rosters, travel, cancellations and claiming.

How do we make the hard decision?
Support for boards deciding whether to keep, change, hand over or close a service, weighing both the money and how close the service is to your purpose. That includes agreeing in advance what success looks like.

How do we get the board on top of the numbers?
Practical financial training for board members and managers without a finance background, built around your own reports, not textbook examples.

How might this work in your organisation?

True to Purpose shows how it can work. It’s the story of a small disability provider and its board working through exactly these problems: a loss nobody saw coming, eleven months of cash, and decisions about services that have always been part of who they are.

Why work with me?

  • Fellow of CPA Australia and Certified Management Consultant

  • Since 2009, I’ve worked with almost 400 businesses and not-for-profit organisations, including disability service providers

  • I’m also an NDIS participant, so I know the scheme from both sides

  • Plain language. No jargon, and no assumption that everyone at the table has a finance background.

Not sure where to start?

Most organisations I work with start with a conversation about what’s worrying them. There’s no charge for that, and no obligation.
